Meet our Speakers:
2:30 pm: Frank R. Scheer
Mail Riding First Class on the Twentieth Century Limited
The Twentieth Century Limited was the New York Central System’s premier train between New York and Chicago from 1902 until 1967. This presentation will be an overview of how mail traveled about the New York Central System’s premier train between New York and Chicago between 1902 and 1967. Ephemera such as postmarked letters, post cards, brochures, advertisements, and other items let us travel along for a half hour on this timeless train from railway’s golden era.
Dr. Frank R. Scheer has been Curator of the Railway Mail Service Library (RMSL) since 1980. The RMSL evolved from the AmeRPO Society Library, which was started in 1952 by Bryant Alden Long, author of MAIL BY RAIL. The collection was transferred to Hershel Rankin, a Railway Mail Clerk on the Memphis & New Orleans RPO as well as other routes. He renamed the collection R.M.S. Library. Frank acquired the collection in 1980 and relocated materials to Alexandria, Virginia. Other collections have been merged during the past three decades and the RMSL moved to the Boyce, Virginia former Norfolk & Western Railway depot during 2004.
3:30 pm: Ellen G. K. Rubin
Animated Paper: Movable Books, Ephemera, and Art from the Collection of Ellen G. K. Rubin, aka The Popuplady
Forty years of collecting pop-up and movable books, ephemera, and their original art, dating from 1535, provides the collection a broad scope in the genre’s history. The Popuplady strenuously seeks new examples for the collection, always trying to move back its timeline. If you have to manipulate the paper to understand the subject or illustration, it belongs in the collection.
Ellen is a founder and Board member of the Movable Book Society. She writes a quarterly column, Poppits, for its newsletter, Movable Stationery. She has appeared on The Martha Stewart Show, CBS Sunday Morning, Japanese TV and Atlas Obscura demonstrating books from her collection. The Popuplady invites you to visit her informational website, www.popuplady.com.
