The New York Times recently ran a feature on the mermaid show at Weeki Wachee Springs (since 1947, and now part of Florida's State Park system) emphasizing the continuing popularity of mermaids among young girls and women who want to get in touch with their 'inner mermaid.' A former mermaid, Bonnie Georgiadis, and Lu Vickers won the Gold Medal for Visual Arts at the 2012 Florida Book Awards for their Weeki Wachee Mermaids: Thirty Years of Underwater Photograph. I've read that nostalgia is now considered, as an emotion, good for one's health. And it occurs to me that there is a sort of cultural nostalgia for eccentric entertainments like the mermaid show (I've never seen it), and for the ephemera that promoted them. Here: a postcard from the early 1960s. Can anyone share actual nostalgic memories of Weeki Wachee?
