The success of the Ephemera Society of America is the result of the efforts of many dedicated people, over the past 34 years. Energized by a mission to preserve ephemera, educate, and create a shared bond of friendship, members have contributed their ideas, and their ideals, to formulate our essential mission. Dealers, Collectors, Academics – all have mutual interests, which come together, in the creation of our unique organization.
Realizing that these efforts should be properly acknowledged, there are now two special categories for recognition. The Maurice Rickards Medal has been in place for many years. Modeled after the Samuel Pepys’ Medal, presented by the Ephemera Society, UK, it is awarded for exceptional contributions to the world of ephemera, demonstrated by scholarly writings, and specific criteria, which extend beyond the ESA and into the wider community.
Last year, in 2013, it was decided by the Recognition Committee, consisting of Richard Sheaff, Chairman, and Barbara Rusch, that another category of recognition needed to be created. Numerous people, who may not have written scholarly works, or otherwise have qualified to receive the Rickards Medal, have contributed substantially to the betterment of the ESA; they definitely merit praise. During this past year, the committee designated recipients, and designed an appropriate medium for this acknowledgement, which reflects the time-honored Reward of Merit we all cherish.
The Reward of Merit Certificate, recreated from an original nineteenth century item of ephemera in the collection of Bruce Shyer, was selected as the proper vehicle for our twenty-first century paper Reward of Merit. Recipients’ names were hand-calligraphied by George Fox. The certificate is accompanied by an enamel lapel pin, which was made available by a generous donation from Barbara Rusch and Donny Zaldin. Recipients may proudly wear a pin that indicates their meaningful contributions. As the initial presentation of the Reward of Merit, it was felt appropriate to include even the names of people for whom the presentation is posthumous. Their families will receive the honor, and their names will be posted in our prestigious Honor Roll. In the future, while there will be fewer names, we hope that this recognition will be an incentive for others. Most of these recipients worked quietly and tirelessly, but it is their labor that became the strong foundation on which we stand today.
It is a pleasure to gratefully acknowledge the winners of these awards on this website.
